5 Ways to Use Your Smartphone to Talk to God

These days more and more people are getting a smartphone whether it’s the iPhone or an Android, our world has been infiltrated with technology. I still remember the first time I saw a commercial advertising a phone that you could do ‘face time’ on or watch movies, and I remember thinking, “Who would ever need that?”

I didn’t get my first cell phone until I was 25-years-old and even then it was a pay-as-you-go variety. I didn’t like the idea of having a phone with me all the time; I didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything so I didn’t see the need. Then I got married and started having children and my husband started worrying that I would break down on the side of the road with our son in the car or that I would have some other emergency and need to get in touch with him. As a result, he bought me a phone – nothing extravagant, just the average call, text, and take a fuzzy picture kind.

Just last year, he upgraded my phone to an iPhone, and for something I thought I would never need . . . I dare say I can’t live with out it. ha! The boys get to call their dad in the morning and have ‘Face Time’, since he is already at work when they wake up, and if he has to work late, he can sing to them and say prayers. But there is one thing that I use my phone for that I never thought would be possible.

More than anything else, I use my phone to talk to God.

Hang on – don’t roll your eyes yet.

Let me explain.

Here are 5 ways I use my phone daily to talk to God:

1. Uploaded a Bible App

My two favorites are YouVersion and Blue Letter Bible. I use YouVersion to read the bible chronologically and Blue Letter Bible for its study tools. This is great for the when I am waiting in the car line to pick up the boys from day school, or when I wake up at the crack of dawn and can’t go back to sleep.

2. Set the Alarm

Normally my husband wakes up first, hops in the shower and gets ready for work. Using my phone I now wake-up before my husband and take a shower, then while he is getting ready I read the Bible. If you are a mom, you know that once the kids wake-up there isn’t much time for devotion.

3. Take Notes

Many times while I am reading or praying, God convicts me or lays something on my heart. If I don’t write it down right then, I will forget it once the diaper changing and lunch making begins. I don’t have a computer in my bedroom and often don’t have anything to write with, but I have my phone. So now I jot down any thoughts I have in notes and then email them to myself.

4. Follow

If you are on Twitter or Facebook, load the apps to your phone and start following people who encourage and challenge you -Christian artists, speakers, ministries, and anyone else who lifts you up. Consider unfollowing and modifying your subscriptions on anyone who doesn’t. I’m not one to ‘unfollow’ someone for posting a lot – heck, I am guilty of that from time to time – but I don’t hesitate if things show up in my feed that I don’t want to see.

5. Get Kindle

The Kindle app is free and there are tons of great books available for Kindle download on Amazon.com. You can even join as a Prime member for 30 days for free and get discounts on many of the books. My favorite author is Thomas Hardy (I love the classics!), and I got a free version of The Well-Beloved that I am reading. But I also have a devotional book and book of humorous Christian stories that I am reading. And the best part . . . I don’t have to keep up with three different books. They are all on my phone.

Don’t misunderstand what I am saying. I don’t think you ‘need’ a smartphone to talk to God. Moses definitely didn’t. But if you have one, why not use it for His glory.

Our preacher is always saying in this day and age no one has an excuse for not knowing the Bible! When you get to Heaven, you can’t say “I didn’t know, God.”
The YouVersion app has a HUGE list of various translations of the Bible and many of them include the audio version.
I personally enjoy the Olive Tree BibleReader app. The only drawback for it is there are as many free translations available but they do sell a ton of Christian reference e-books. I use it for my study Bible and it also syncs to my account and through EverNote which also use for many other uses.

I haven’t used the Olive Tree app, but will have to take a look. I do love Evernote and didn’t think to include it in this post. I have it on my computer and it makes idea gathering easy. And I agree with your preacher, the Bible is available everywhere and we won’t have an excuse when we get to Heaven.
